marimekko melooni jute placemat

The Melooni pattern on this placemat is woven from different coloured jute threads.

Jute is a durable fibre that requires less water, fertilizers, and pesticides to grow than for example cotton.

A large, laid-back pattern of stylized natural forms, Melooni (melon) is one of the many designs in Maija Isola’s output of the 1960s. Exuding the swinging spirit of the era, the pattern consists of three oval forms in three different hues. Isola drew inspiration for the pattern from nature, as she often did in her design work, but decided to deconstruct the motif so that what was left was only an abstract, stylized design.
